Today I woke up with a song in my head, and it hasn't gone away yet. Bruno Mars "Again". Now if you don't know the song, it is about a man who wakes up, and misses his train, and by that coincidence, he meets his new love waiting for the next one. In essence the message is that all the crap he had gone through in life was worth it. He would do it all over again because everything he had been through had led him to her, and all the suffering was worth finding her.
This is not the first time this song has rang so true for me. Long before I met Gerald I knew this song would one day have a person attached to it. It didn't take long before he was, and attached to several other of my "anthems" (you know what I mean by anthem, right? Like a song that stands for someone, or some time in your life and it will always hold special meaning. It can even represent some part of you)
Anyway, I guess underneath it all I woke up today moving onto the stage of acceptance. It is sad, but now I know I can let him be. I do still hope that he will come looking for me, even if it is just in friendship, because I love him not only as my love, but as my best friend. I opened up to him more of myself than I ever have to anyone else. But, it IS time that I let go; not let go of hope, but to let go of the expectation, the need, but not the want. I will find some way today of doing that.
For the past couple of months I have been learning so much, but the absolute best place I have found is a blog by a long-time depressed man. His blog is so honest, and insightful, that I have painstakenly copied almost every post into a word document, arranged them as best I could, so that his thoughts flow in a pattern to describe what depression is, what the symptoms are like, how it affects the person, and how he has found the ability to recover and live with his condition. It has sections that apply specifically to work issues, how men deal with depression (It is vastly different than women) and how a depressed man reacts in a relationship. So far I have read every post at least once, and am now going through them in the order I created. It is amazing.
My point is, last night before bed I ended reading this post: http://www.storiedmind.com/depressed-partners/i-cant-let-you-in/
This one I had NOT read yet, on purpose, as I knew it would be the most revealing one, that would explain to me exactly how Gerald feels/felt as he shut me out of his life. (I dont think I am trying to push a description of "what happened" onto him. Much of what he said to me in the last 4 months rings so true to this blogger's posts, and readers comments, that there is NO WAY he is not being seriously affected by depression. I just dont know if this is the ONLY reason we are over)
After I read that post, I closed my eyes fully understanding the isolation and impotence depression can enforce, and I sent out a prayer that both Gerald and I be able to move forward.
So when I woke up this morning with that song in my head, I knew some of that had happened. And as I stood there getting ready for the day and looking at myself in the mirror, I suddenly began wondering about other men I had dated in the past. In particular the first man I went out with, with whom I had felt the potential for a lot more, at least a potential for a great friendship. [unfortunately we had both consciously decided to throw that away by having a one-night stand 4 months after we stopped dating...yeah, I know. But we both knew what we were doing, and it was WORTH it! ;)]
And so I sit here today, realizing that I can leave the door open for Gerald, and am hesitantly ready to move forward with my life. Maybe to rekindle friendships that I let fall to the side, maybe to start new ones. I don't know yet if I will contact that old flame/friend, but it nice to think about it, and know that Gerald isn't the only man out there who "gets me" and thought I was amazing (that other guy was FRESH out of separation, and there was no chance of anything but a fling with him..he realized he couldn't give me what I was looking for and backed off, but we stayed friends up until THAT night).
Today I took another step forward, and it feels good :) Yes, there are tears in my eyes as I write this, for I am leaving behind the happiest days of my life, and someone I love so very much. But there is a smile along with those tears, because I think I am on my way to something even better...a stronger me, who is able to embrace change without regret or anger and with hope and belief and faith. Hope that Gerald will find a path that leads back to me, belief that he will always love me, and faith that I will get through this and live to feelsunshine again.

I am sad. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since I last saw Gerald. When I think about that panic starts up and my breathing gets shallow. I dont know what the point is in telling you this, but I need to say it.
I am back and forth between thinking I am ok and can "wait" this out for as long as he needs, and wanting to tell him that I can't accept the downgrade to "just friends". I want to know if this breakup is because of his depression or if he really wants it over. It could be both.
I am on this emotional rollercoaster, and I could so easily stop it just by getting off and saying "see ya". I know I could do that, and I would heal quickly and all that would be left are some wonderful memories.
But if this is because of the depression (and I do think it is a big factor)I could be sealing the fate on the isolation he wanted, which will likely be the worst thing I could do, for him anyway.
Think about it. When I am upset (angry, sad, etc) and I feel out of control, the one thing I don't want is for someone to touch me. Why? because the act of touch says you care, when you reach out to someone who is in pain, it crumbles the wall of self-control they have built up to protect them. I used to do that with my ex all the time, and when I told him not to touch me, he didn't. But Gerald, he never listened. He knew that was just a way to push him away, to protect myself from more pain, but since he was not going to hurt me, he pulled me in. It was exactly what I needed, every time.
I am so confused, and thinking about this is not getting me anywhere. I have done so much reading on relationships, the brain and behavioural differences between men and women, and even about depression and men in relationships with depression. I could write a book or 12 on all of it. But it still doesn't give me an answer, or a plan.
When it comes down to it, all I have to guide me is my brain, and my heart. My brain says that its looking like I should start to move on. My brain is looking at the serious decline in text messages, and the loss of his presence, and the fact that the only responsibilities he has left to me are to repair things (like bring me a stove and fix my car). My brain is crunching stats, and it comes down to the difference between then and now, and it is huge. My brain says "it wasn't long enough", and "he has no attachment to you".
But my brain also knows depression, and this is where my brain says "you wanted to be alone too, you wanted everyone to leave you be". My brain says "I lied to you, I told you it was better if nobody touched you", and my brain knows that it was wrong, and that being with people who loved me unconditionally was the ONE THING that brought me back. It wasn't my family that pulled me back into the world of living, it wasn't medication, for all that does is to stabilize the ups and downs. It was MY FRIENDS, people I didn't know cared so much, who filled my days with plans and showed me how to have fun and let me cry when I needed to, and who hugged me ESPECIALLY when I told them not to touch me. They held me so I could break down that wall, they hugged me and held me up when my legs literally gave way and I slumped towards the ground.
And so my brain argues back and forth with itself. On the surface it looks "over", in the depths it remembers how what depression said I needed was a lie, and how the exact opposite of "alone" was what got me through, and still does. My brain wonders if that is exactly what he needs?
But my heart, my heart has no doubt. My heart knows that it has already done everything that it can, and my heart is just waiting for the chance to pour all of its warmth out for him. My heart remembers not only the wonderful words that came from his mouth, the talk of the future, of being best friends, and in love, of buying a home together, the suggestion of another child. But my heart remembers more the action, how he came to my rescue time and again, how he didn't just "talk" about the future, but that he looked into what he mentioned, that he acted as a partner, took care of me, and my child, that he was the one person who knew me best. My heart knows, in every cell, that walking away will not end the love it has for him, my heart is steadfast, loyal and does not give up on those it loves. My heart feels that it has found a soulmate, my heart believes that, and even now I can still feel it smiling inside.
And so I sit here still not able to breathe quite as deeply as I want to, but still I can breathe. My brain cannot decide if walking away is the answer, and my heart will hear none of its arguments.
In the absence of movement, in the stillness, I wait. Not in the sense of helplessness, but with hope, and the power that comes from "not moving". "Potential energy" it is called, and it is fitting.....

Today I took yet another step forward. As I drove to my first counseling session, my favourite love songs playing, I struggled with what I would tell the counselor. Obviously my continuing issues with my child's father were part of it. And I for sure wanted to talk about the strain MS was placing on my ability to work full time, and inability to get back to exercising. She was already well aware of the situation with my daughter, and she knew all the changes we were trying to adjust to. But of course the most important thing on my mind was my ex boyfriend, the relationship that had been a blessing I never expected, and then a loss that was almost too much to bear.
As I pulled up to the stoplight near the office, I looked up, and my answer was written in the sky. It had been raining much of the day, but now it was cloudy and grey. Through the centre of that glum sky there was a pale rainbow, difficult to see, but it was there, and instantly I felt my heart jump into my throat.
Last fall, driving home from class, I noticed a very weird rainbow above some condos. It wasnt shaped like a rainbow though, it was square, and not quite as wide across as the rooftop of the condo it was visible above. I cant remember now which way the colours were (red from the left or red from the right) but they followed on the normal pattern. But it was SQUARE, not a sharp square, but there was definitely a square shape, and edges, and there was no way ot was a regular rainbow.
I will admit, I texted Gerald right away to tell him about it (we had been dating about 3 weeks). I tried to take a picture, but I didnt think of it at first, and as I grabbed my phone, it disappeared. Gerald's response was odd. He said something about being very happy I had seen the rainbow thing, and to ask him about it later. And to stop texting while I was driving!
I forgot about it for a few days, but eventually I remembered to ask him. He told me that ever since his mom had passed away, he had seen a rainbow on significant days in his life; his wedding day, the day his daughter was born, and a few others I forget. But he said that those rainbows were not "normal" they were always odd shaped. And not only significant days in his life were marked by this "rainbow-shape", but significant people. He said that a couple of other very important people in his life had described these rainbow things to him, within days of meeting him they saw them (one was his ex-wife, and mother of his child, the other his stepmother). So when I described this rainbow shape to him Gerald said that was his mom's way of giving her blessing to me. He believed that she approved of what what to come between us, and was extremely pleased.
In the past few years I have become very attuned to these little messages that the universe sends to me. I have read up on animal totems, learned grounding techniques to both rid myself of toxic stress and feelings, and practiced tuning myself to the song of nature (I know that sounds kooky, but trust me it HAS helped). I have long believed that there is more out there, and that whatever we can't see is sending us messages all the time. Gerald himself says he can feel "spirits". I have to say that is NOT something I ever expected a guy to admit, but I think its wicked cool.
So when I looked up and there was a rainbow (a regular shaped one, but still a rainbow), right there in front of me, I knew that I just had to keep believing that he and I were not "over". I grabbed my phone and snapped a pic as fast I could, and my phone died right there. I tried to plug it in, but by the time the light changed to green, my phone had not finished rebooting, and the rainbow was gone. I pulled over with my heart in my throat and tears in my eyes, and a song blasting the words "say what you need to say" into my ears. And as my phone rebooted, the photo was there waiting...
After my counseling session, when I had spilled all my fears, I sent the picture to him. I can only hope and pray that he remembers that day, and sees that there is still a chance for us.

Learning to Fly
I have been thinking for a long time that I need to get back to writing my story. Over the past few years I have found myself spending ample amounts of spare time (and not so spare time) participating in online forums.
At first it was out of a desperation to find some relief, some answers and maybe a kind word from someone who had been in my shoes. But I soon found that I was learning, and listening to others and passing out my own story and offering advice. Not that I always had something revolutionary to say, sometimes all I could offer was a virtual hug, shared misery, but other times I actually had an answer, or a suggestion where to start, and occasionally I even played devil's advocate and gave someone a kick in the pants to get them to see the other side. Sometimes I was downright mean, but only to those who deserved it, and if they didn't then I apologized if I offended.
Participating in a divorce forum, a pregancy and child forum, an MS forum, these places have not only taught me so much more about thses subjects, but how to deal with them in my own life. Through the experiences of others I learned what mistakes I was making, and even managed to avoid making a few more. Although I was already pretty good at seeing the "other" perspective, I heard from fathers who were fighting for custody and time with their kids. Instead of fighting to keep my child to myself, I realized that she needed her father as much as she needed me, and I did what I could to allow it and encourage that relationship. It was not an easy task, especially for a woman who had been abused and mistreated by that same man, but I found a way to do it.
So 3 years later, we have just finally come to an understanding. It took court battles and involving the children's lawyer and it damaged all three of us, and most horribly my daughter. But all along my intentions were good, and we have finally reached a point where I can breathe again.
I would like to say that I have come through the fire, and the hurts of the past have been burned clean. For the most part, that is true; I have forgiven my ex for the past and though we still are having some problems, we are both trying very hard to make it work so our daughter can be happy.
I have moved forward with my life. I studied hard and completed my Master's degree, and graduated with honours and a scholarship for my effort. I have spent countless hours researching, reading and evaluating myself, aiming to understand who I am, and what it is that will bring me happiness. I took time to enjoy my own company, time with friends who loved me for the person I was, even broken, and who held me together with their support while I healed.
Along the way I challenged myself physically, intellectually, emotionally. I joined a bootcamp, worked my ass off (literally) and in 2011 I climbed a volcano in Costa Rica! I faltered when my MS flared up suddenly after that, and gained a new MS symptom that has yet to leave; fatigue. I struggle with it daily, take pills, nap when I can, and am so disappointed in myself. I tell myself that I have to accept my new limits, that I need to pull myself out of this funk and get active any way that I can, in whatever capacity I can handle, but something keeps holding me back. I dont know how to do this by myself. In this I am lost...
I began dating. I met many nice men, got hooked on a few and made amatuer mistakes that left my heart broken. So I put my efforts into researching and learning about love, and how GOOD relationships work, and what I was doing wrong. I learned a LOT about co-dependence, and how I contributed to the end of my marriage by doing for my ex. I learned how different men and women were, and started allowing myself to BE a woman, to actually experience my feelings and not stuff them back inside. I practiced with my male friends, and the response was immediate. They laughed and flirted with me when I was in a good mood, supported and rescued me when I was down or asked for help. They checked on me, made sure I was ok, and taught me that it was good to let a man do for you. I learned that my power as a woman lie with BEING a woman, and doing what I did best, not fighting for control, but accepting that someone else knew better, and would do it better, and would take care of me along the way. I let him paddle, and carry my things, and hold me when I needed to cry. And I fell half in love with a friend because he did all of these things for me and asked nothing in return.
And then when I was ready to take a break from dating, I met Gerald. He was not what I thought I was looking for. I didn't want to date a mechanic, and to be honest the only reason I even answered his message was because he was boyishly cute and worked at an amusement park. I waited days before responding to his messages, still pining a little over someone else, and dating a couple other men I was not really interested in. But he was persistent. Not in an agressive way, he just kept responding, and telling me just a little bit more each time. When he asked to call me, I was not sure I wanted to talk. I was tired and jaded and not really open to investing myself again.
That night as we talked he really opened up to me. Not inappropriately. I had learned to be quite honest about what had happened in my past, as it served to scare off the guys who were not able to deal with that or accept it. I told him all about it, the nuts and olts at least. Gerald began relating his past to me, how his marriage had been much like mine, and I understood intuitively how deeply that would wound a man. And then he told me about his experience with counseling, and how he learned that he had never really grieved for his mother's passing which had been years before. And he told me how he had finally gone through the process, and how much that had helped him. And my heart warmed a little for this man who was so willing to open up to someone he had not yet met.
But that still wasnt the point when I decided to give him a chance. It wasn't until I asked him gently how his mother had died, and he said "complications of MS". My heart stopped, and my breath caught in my throat, and for a second it was like an electric jolt ran through my body paralyzing me. At that moment I don't even know if it was a decision I made, or if I had no choice, but I blurted out "I have MS". I wanted to rip those words out of the air and stuff them back down my throat! NEVER had I felt the words hang in the air like that, waiting for a response. In the next breath the world righted itself; his response was healing, it was acceptance, it was kind. There was no pause between my "confession" and his response. It was "no big deal". He asked how it affected me, and we talked about my experience, and his mother's and I learned how much his father had sacrificed for the love of his mother.
It wasn't too long after that call that I met Gerald for a first date. I was still quite unsure of whether I wanted to date a mechanic. I expected someone like my ex, someone wrapped up in proving his manhood, someone not interested in ANYTHING that intrigued me. But I was pleasantly surprised. He showed up with a single red rose (the first flower I recieved after about 20 first dates). I tried not to choke on my laugh, I was NOT a schoolgirl. We ordered food and discovered we had almost all the same preferences (mmmmm bruschetta made with feta) and both couldn't stand seafood. as we talked he kept mentioning how similar we were, every time we discovered a same experience, a shared taste in food, music, interest.
And still, at the end of the date I didn't know if I was interested. He walked me to my car and asked if I would see him again. I said yes, but in my mind I scoffed a little. He opened my car door for me and I said goodnight and got in. My leg was still hanging out the door, and I looked up as he turned away. I decided right there that I was NOT going to keep going out on dates with men who I didn't know if I wanted to see again, it was too much work. I needed to know if I was just wasting my time. So I got back out of the car, put my hand on his shoulder and turned him a little. I leaned in and kissed him.
WHOA! I cannot describe the fire that flared up, and at the same time the feeling of comfort as his arms came around me. It was not fireworks, but I had found fireworks before, and knew that they were not the promise of happily-ever-after everyone thought they were. This was different, less intense and at the same time, better. As I pulled back he had a stunned crooked smile on his face and I noticed how cute his dimples were. He WAS getting that second date.

He WAS getting that second date.

kick in the ass
Thursday night. Silvia was crying for her dad (becasue she didn't like the rules that her aunt and I were setting) so I let her call him. She was crying so hard that she couldn't talk, so I took the phone and told him. Talked for a few minutes, trying to work out details for the birthday party he was taking her to Saturday. He started telling me that he was a better father and I must be doing something wrong because she never cries when she's with him and never asks to call me. It only got worse from there. I had offered him to pick her up Friday from daycare so he didn't have to come out to my house to pick her up Saturday, but after he said such horrible things I took it back, he could only have her for the party. So he says that I am violating the court order, turns my words around , trying to make it seem like I was saying she wasn't going at all. Of course I wasn't doing that! It was like walking back into time, to before we were separated, except that this time I was no longer immune to his words, I had taken all the armour off. I can't even describe how awful it was, and now I am back to being depressed, unstable etc,
I was seriously contemplating just letting him have the joint custody and ending this fight. But after what he said to me and how he manipulated me (after 9 months) how can I ever believe he won't continue it. So I applied for another 10,000 extension on my line of credit. This is going to have to go to court, maybe even to trial. I am having a really hard time at home with my mom and sister and the only reason I even left my room this weekend was for my daughter. Honestly I can say that I have never felt this low. Maybe when I first left, or when we first were going to court, but after the last few months of starting to feel happy again, it feels like a completely new low.The drop from where I was before to where I am now was like walking off a cliff.

For some reason tonight I came across this person's blog, this particular post. It explains exactly what my everyday was like. It wasn't a bunch of huge blowouts, but this wearing down every day that really is what damages a person. Maybe some of you can understand what I went through...
Thankfully that part of my life is over, really OVER. I'm ready to move on, with just a few ends left to tie up to do with custody of my daughter. I'm feeling upbeat and optimistic about the future and I think I'm almost ready to start meeting new people (yes, I mean men!)Not that I am eager to get into a relationship, but I know now one day I will find someone who will love me for the person I am and not the one they want me to be.

Got an order made giving me every Thursday (for counselling) and him every Wednesday (in compensation) until counselling is over. We will continue the week to week. Division of holidays, directions for special family events and compensatory time within 14 days. Decided how child support will be determined.
Really nothing big changed except that he sat down at the table and accepted many of the things I had originally offered. We are going to attempt to settle the financials ourselves through email.
I did feel a little sorry for him though. He is obviously taking this really badly, even after 7 months. Guess being controlling does not necessarily mean you are actually able to take control of yourself. This is where the karma comes in.
Yeah, so it was ok. Very emotionally draining, esp on 4 hours sleep. But it was empowering too. I felt intimidated, but I sat at the table with him and the lawyers and even spoke on my own. I stood my ground. I felt like he didn't have the control over me that he used to, and I saw that he knew that and was grasping at straws. He might have thought he wore the pants in our relationship, but yesterday it was so obvious who was the backbone.
Overall it was well worth the $2000 it probably cost. Yeah, I said $2000. but the relief I feel now, and the happiness I have felt in the past few weeks and will continue to feel is worth every penny.
Oh, and I weighed myslef agina this morning just to see if I had really lost 6 lbs...YES!!!
